Get Arty! Take Part With Art

AccessArt is pleased to announce a brand new initiative with Mencap and we'd love your school to join us!

Aimed at children from ages 5 to 11, Get Arty! aims to bring everyone together to take part in accessible creative activities which celebrate our unique personalities.

AccessArt has helped shape the Get Arty! concept and developed the art activities below:

Making Finger Puppets

AccessArt and Mencap have got three great ways for you to make finger puppets depending on your time or level of expertise. Starting with a simple print, colour, cut and stick and moving on to a full blown sculptural version, we hope you are inspired to make some puppets and possibly put on a show!

Making Worry Dolls

Worry dolls are handmade dolls, most often made in Guatemala from wire, wool and small pieces of fabric. The dolls are often tiny, though Western versions can be much larger. Traditionally, the dolls are given to children to help them with their worries. Children will share their concerns with the dolls and then place them under their pillows where the worries will go away over night.

World in a Matchbox

Children love working on a miniature scale where they can create worlds which they can control and oversea. AccessArt and Mencap have devised the “World in a Box” activity to enable children plenty of creative freedom resulting in fantastic autobiographical artwork.

How it works

It’s easy to take part. Just sign up to the Get Arty! mailing list below via Mencap. In March Mencap will send you a free Get Arty! pack that includes:

  • Art activities, devised by AccessArt, that are fun and easy to deliver
  • Lesson/assembly plans that you can adapt to your school’s needs
  • Resources to teach children about learning disability – including a video and presentation
  • various other creative and fundraising ideas that can be delivered in your school.
