Andy Lawrence

Artistic Director at Theatre of Widdershins

Andy Lawrence is the artistic director of the children’s theatre company Theatre of Widdershins which he founded in 1993.  Basically, he designs, makes and performs everything whilst his wife, Penny earns the money by being an astute manager (- she also directs the shows!)

Although Andy learned the craft of storytelling (or ‘being loud in an interesting manner’) and puppetry (or ‘moving things in an interesting manner’) on the road, he trained as a costume maker/designer for the theatre (at Wimbledon School of Art) and for a while made a living from creating costumes for Dr. Who, Chronicles of Narnia and Black Adder.  But after realising he had made one ridiculous costume for Little & Large too many, his lifelong love of puppets started to materialise.

Whilst starting the very slow process of experimenting with styles of puppet and performance (- to tell the truth, he had no idea of what he was doing) he undertook a series of very worthwhile art teaching posts (Touch & see group, Bedford Prison, and Central School of Speech & Drama).

Finding a real enjoyment in teaching, he undertook a PGCE (Secondary) and then taught for six years as a Textiles teacher at Kimbolton School where the Head described him as “that rare animal – popular and respected”.

Now, as a fully qualified teacher, as well as peforming shows in schools he often runs workshops in class – mainly on making puppets but occasionally on performance and storytelling techniques, where even the meekest of pupils have plucked up the courage to put on a big voice and say “Once upon a time…..”
